The digits of the octal escape whose backslash is at the given offset: one to three octal digits, limited to \377 (255). The escape's value is the digits read in base 8, and the escape spans the backslash plus the digits. THE one reading behind both decoders (it was two copies of the same loop, one for the value and one for the length).
